Time for Nature – World Environment Day 2020

Today, on World Environment Day 2020, The Habitat stands in solidarity with the United Nations Environment Programme in this appeal to all of humanity to realise that we are living in truly exceptional times. Our planet continues to be assaulted every day by our activities. This has never been more apparent than in the past year when the impacts of climate change have been chillingly displayed. The way we live is depleting the life source of the earth. We continue to rob nature of its riches and burden it with our waste. There is time yet to act but it is only a narrow window. We cannot afford to squander it.

Nature is sending us the message that to care for ourselves we must care for nature.

Many have remarked that the global pandemic has been a Great Pause. By stopping the mad rush and the machines of capitalism, we have been given time to think about what is most important to us. If this pause is to become a Great Reset, then let us use this World Environment Day as a wake up call to make better choices in all that we do.

This morning, the sun will rise and we will have a fresh opportunity to wake up and build back better for ourselves and our planet. At The Habitat, this is our core business – this is why we get up in the morning! Our mission is to conserve, educate and inspire. We are committed to doing things differently. We will continue to invest in biodiversity conservation and habitat restoration, encourage and empower young people who are our future, build communities and networks of enlightened people, and through all these efforts, demonstrate that transformative change is possible.

We want to take this opportunity to thank our Inhabitant members who have been with us on this journey, and to thank the many committed individuals and organizations who continue to show us that we are not alone and we walk with many with a vision for a better future.
