Assoc. Prof. Dr. Abdul Hafiz Abdul Majid is an Urban and Molecular Entomologist based at the School of Biological Sciences (USM). He received his BSc in Biology and Management of Vectors and Parasites and MSc in Urban and Industrial Entomology from USM. He has a PhD in Urban and Molecular Entomology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and is a Board-Certified Entomologist (BCE) in Urban and Industrial Entomology. His main research focuses on urban insect pest management (termites, bed bugs, ants, cockroaches, store product beetles) and the application of molecular genetic tools (microsatellite markers; gene expression, metagenomics, transcriptome, RNA, DNA genotyping, mtDNA sequence data) to understand breeding and population genetic structure of termites and other urban insect pests. The research seeks to understand insecticide resistance mechanisms and behaviour especially in bed bugs and other urban insects. Bioinformatics and computational molecular biology are also applied to further understand the dispersal pattern of insect pests in the urban environment. Other research areas include insecticide degradation, toxicology and the environmental fate of insecticides used for termite control, and developing new biological control products to control urban insect pests and green pest management.
