The Habitat Penang Hill, in collaboration with the Penang State Government, Penang Hill Corporation and Penang Forestry Department, is coordinating efforts to list Penang Hill as part of a proposed UNESCO Biosphere Reserve for Penang Island under UNESCO’s Man and Biosphere Programme. A comprehensive biodiversity assessment is a vital step towards obtaining this UNESCO classification. Research on the canopies at Penang Hill will provide much of the valuable information required on the biodiversity study.
The 2nd Symposium on the Study of the Biodiversity at Penang Hill again gathers together world-renowned canopy research scientists who will share their experiences with the attendees both local and foreign. Close collaboration between local and foreign academia is essential to the success of the entire Biosphere Initiative.
