The Habitat Penang Hill, in collaboration with Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Penang Forestry Department and Penang Hill Corporation is coordinating efforts to list Penang Hill as part of the proposed UNESCO Biosphere Reserve for Penang Island under UNESCO’s Man and Biosphere Programme. A comprehensive biodiversity assessment is a vital step towards obtaining this UNESCO classification. Research on the canopies at Penang Hill will provide much of the valuable information required on the biodiversity study. To kickstart this research process, The Habitat in partnership with USM is organising a joint Symposium called “The Launch-Canopy Science and Forest Conservation in Penang” this October 5, 2016. The Symposium gathers together world-renowned canopy research scientists who will share their experiences with the attendees both local and foreign. A full Biodiversity Assessment, called the “BioBlitz” is scheduled to be presented by September, 2017.
